At least 12.5% of Western Massachusetts residents are living below the poverty line, and that number is growing.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts partners with local food pantries, meal sites, shelters, residential programs, and youth and elder care centers to bring food to people who are experiencing hunger in dozens of diverse urban and rural communities in western Massachusetts. Annually, we provide about 7 million pounds of food to our approximately 300 member programs and our 45 Brown Bag: Food for Elders locations across the region.
All Food Bank member agencies must meet certain requirements for membership. In particular, they must serve the needy people of Western Massachusetts – meaning that at least 51% of those who receive their services must meet certain income requirements or live in an economically distressed community.
More than 80% of Food Bank food is distributed to emergency food programs – food pantries, meal sites, and shelters. A much smaller percentage of our food supports non-emergency food programs – such as residential centers, child care programs, and elder programs – that offer food as part of their services to needy households.
Emergency food programs include food pantries, shelters and meal sites that provide food assistance to the general public. As the front-line providers of food assistance, these programs are the lifeline for thousands of households that need additional support to meet their basic food needs. Emergency food programs meet an unmet need in their community for food assistance and are open to the community.
Find an emergency food program site in your community:
Non-emergency food programs are those that provide food as part of their other services to the community. These programs include residential/rehabilitation programs, child care centers, elder day centers, youth programs and camps. Like emergency food programs, these agencies rely on The Food Bank for food, but their services may be targeted towards certain members of the community instead of the general public.
All emergency and non-emergency Food Bank member agencies are listed by town below.
