Family Volunteer Day summer farm series

Summer can be the hungriest time of year for kids from low-income families. With school out of session, they will no longer be receiving the free school breakfasts or lunches they had access to during the school year, leaving food insecure families struggling to feed their kids. They have no choice but to seek assistance to get them through the summer months.

June, July and August are, by far, the busiest time of year for food pantries and meal sites across the country. Right here in Western Massachusetts, 300,900 different individuals were served at our member agencies during those three months last year.

The Food Bank, in partnership with Hilltown Families, will be hosting a special Family Volunteer Day summer series at Mountain View Farm in Easthampton. This is an opportunity to learn about the issue food insecurity in our region and the impact it has on the community.

The first of the three special Family Volunteer Day events will take place on Saturday, June 27, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Mountain View Farm (393 East St, Easthampton). All ages are welcome, as families are invited to help with a number of possible activities, including weeding, planting and harvesting. Reservations are required by contacting The Food Bank’s Education Coordinator.

Since 2009, The Food Bank has enjoyed a very unique and important relationship with Mountain View Farm, a community supported agriculture farm in Easthampton. They lease use of The Food Bank’s farmland in Hadley, in exchange for 100,000 pounds of fresh, chemical-free produce to distribute to food pantries, meal sites and shelters. Last year, Mountain View Farms was The Food Bank’s largest food donor, provided nearly 200,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.
