Among all client households served by The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, 71% are food insecure, according to the U.S. government’s official food security scale.
On Friday, April 25, we held our fifth biennial Food Bank Gala event at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, hosted by Seth Stutman and Ashley Kohl from WWLP’s Mass Appeal. Hundreds of people came out to help us prohibit hunger at the 1920′s themed Speakeasy Soiree. We’re happy to announce that through your support, this signature fundraising event raised just over $65,000 for The Food Bank! Since 2006, the Gala event has raised approximately $365,000.
We would like to thank everyone that came out to the event and supported our mission to feed our neighbors in need. With the funds raised from this event, we will be able to provide an additional 195,000 meals to individuals in the community that are struggling with food insecurity.
Currently, an estimated 200,000 residents in Western Massachusetts are faced with the problem of hunger (a number that has doubled in the last five years). Each week, 15,000 people seek food assistance from The Food Bank and our 300 member agencies comprised of food pantries, shelters and emergency meal sites.
Ninety-one cents of every dollar donated to The Food Bank goes to support our programs, including our Brown Bag: Food for Elders program (which delivers free bags of groceries once a month to seniors, at 91 sites across the region) and our new Mobile Food Bank (which delivers fresh, healthy food directly to underserved populations). In 2013, we distributed more than 8 million pounds of food to individuals across Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties.
Thank you to all of the participating restaurants and food & beverage vendors:
A special thank you to the other businesses and professionals:
