Brown Bag offers a free bag of groceries every month to low-income people 55 years of age or older.

Brown Bag serves people at many senior centers and Councils on Aging in the four counties of western Massachusetts.

Brown Bag participants receive a bag of food each month, plus a newsletter with recipes and tips for healthy living.

The Brown Bag program is operated by the Food Bank, with help from local Councils on Aging and other partners.

Who can get a Brown Bag?

If you qualify for SSI, Medicaid, Fuel Assistance or Veteran's Aid, you probably qualify to receive Brown Bag monthly groceries, but many other people qualify, too.  Even if you think you won't qualify, you just might.  Please call The Food Bank and ask!  Our number is 800-247-9632.

How do I apply for Brown Bag?

Download an application in English or Spanish.  Or call The Food Bank or your local Council on Aging. A simple application is all that's required.

How does it work?

Once a month, our truck will arrive at your local senior center or Council on Aging. On that day, you simply stop by and pick up your bag. We'll tell you which day and time to expect us.

What if I can't get there?

If you can't pick up your own bag, you can ask a friend or family member to pick it up for you. If you don't have someone who can help, we will try to find a volunteer to deliver your bag.

What if I have to miss a pick-up day?

If you know you will be unable to pick up your Brown Bag, please call our toll free number (1-800-247-9632) and let us know. In case of a winter storm, please call your local Council on Aging, meal site or The Food Bank for information.

Can I volunteer?

Volunteers help unload food from the truck, put it in the bags, and deliver bags to folks who can't get to the site. If you'd like to volunteer, please call The Food Bank. It's fun and we need your help!
