March is National Nutrition Month® — an education and information campaign sponsored annually by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
Throughout the month of March, The Food Bank will be posting several facts, tips, recipes and other nutrition-focus information on our social media sites. Follow us on Facebook and on Twitter to learn more about what you can and your family can do to lead a healthier and happier life.
Here at The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, nutrition plays an important part in our overall commitment to the community. Our nutrition program offers participating agencies a variety of approaches aimed at helping people develop healthier eating and shopping habits. We offer nutrition consultation at food pantries, meal sites, and Brown Bag programs during food distribution hours. We also provide workshops which serve the staff of emergency food programs to guide them in offering better choices to their clients, allowing individuals to provide more nutritious food to their families.
When it comes to children’s health, it is crucial that they are consuming the essential nutrients they need to grow. They require a variety of nutrient-dense foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meat, fish and adequate calories in order to grow and develop properly. The way children eat influences their growth and health during childhood, adolescence, and for the rest of their lives.
