Thirty communities in western Massachusetts have hunger rates that are six times higher than the statewide average.
The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, AARP, and the AARP Foundation have teamed up to assist households who may be eligible but have not yet applied for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Due to recent changes to the SNAP program, more people are eligible than ever before. You may qualify if you work, receive Social Security, SSI, or even retirement benefits. Even if you own a home or car, have money in the bank, or live with others you may still apply.
To find out if you are eligible for SNAP, come to one of the free and confidential SNAP Clinics in Springfield during the month of September:
September 13 1-4pm Mason Square Library, 765 State Street
September 20 1-4pm Mason Square Library, 765 State Street
September 27 1-4pm Brightwood Library, 359 Plainfield Street
If you are eligible for SNAP, staff and volunteers can help you start your application process. You may also pre-register by calling AARP at 1-877-926-8300.
