Thirty communities in western Massachusetts have hunger rates that are six times higher than the statewide average.
If you don’t know yet, September 17 marks the day when The Food Bank will host the first annual “Will Bike 4 Food” charity cycling event. Focused on fostering community around a healthy activity, “Will Bike 4 Food” will raise funds and awareness to fight hunger and food insecurity in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire Counties.
Cyclists of all ages and levels will embark from Millside Park, just off the Manhan Rail Trail in Easthampton, on one of three routes through scenic Pioneer Valley in the early Fall. Twenty-five, 50 and 100 miles routes offer views of the Holyoke Range and bucolic farms and fields. (Descriptions of the routes can be found here.) The Food Bank has been working closely with cycling experts to determine the most interesting and challenging routes for any level of cyclist.
Following the ride, an after party at Millside Park will feature beer donated by Berkshire Brewing Company, food from Bueno Y Sano, and entertainment provided by The Alchemystics and Team E.A.S.T. Families and friends of participating cyclists who wish to attend the after-party may participate in the festivities for an admission fee of 15 dollars.
“We are thrilled and excited to see what will come of this first-year ride,” says Andrew Morehouse, executive director of The Food Bank. “An event that brings people together around a humbling and important cause for a day of activity and community is one that we are proud to host. We hope that it will prove successful for years to come.”
Participants may register for the ride and raise funds in teams or as individuals. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit The Food Bank of Western Mass., and will help us distribute much needed food to our neighbors in need. Every one dollar raised will enable The Food Bank to provide 13 dollars of food.
The Food Bank has provided materials and resources to help participants in their fundraising efforts. These and other details including how to register, prize levels, a day-of itinerary and registration fees can be found at www.foodbankwma.org/events/bike. Participants who register before August 15 will receive an early-bird fundraising discount. So register today, and help us make this event a success!Comments Off
